Photopia is an interactive fiction game made by Adam Cadre in which you can make decisions for the character and shift the direction of the story at your own will. You can decide whether to move east or west, the dialogue, what to pick up, and so much more. The premise of an interactive fiction game is already interesting in itself, but Photopia makes it captivating. With its surreal like story, it jumps from one character to another, keeping the reader on their toes at all times. One minute you’re in a car, and another you’re on mars. The best part is that each story is as interesting as the next, so although your time may have been cut short with one story, it’s even more exciting to start or continue another. Each story line is uniquely different but all mesh together extremely well, making the jumps between each one seamless. The writing style is what really helps with the smooth transitioning and it’s also just really well written. It could still be a really great story without the interactive element, which is why its on a whole different level.

The actual gameplay itself helps brings the sense of the unknown to its full effect, where for most of it you are in the dark. You have no idea what you’re looking at until you give the command to examine or move to another location leaving the possibility endless for what you’re going to read next. The commands themselves are pretty easy to get the hang of. The game is clear when it doesn’t understand the command being used and always takes a quick retype in order to solve the issue. At the beginning of the game there is a rundown on how to play and what commands to use and what they mean, which really helped show all of things you’re able to do within the game and storyline. The discovery element that comes along with the long list of commands is really amazing, there is so much to uncover with the easiest command and it’s also extremely satisfying.

Everyone should play Photopia, if you’re into reading or not, I’m sure you would and will love it. It’s one of those games that makes you and your brain happy. It’s the perfect mix of mind boggling and eye opening, that truly makes it one of a kind.
