A list of the sound recordings (music, soundscapes, poetry, oral history, etc.) played in Concordia University’s Webster Library entrance staircase for a particular installation and which includes information about the artist or selector.
The content originates from Concordia Library’s audio collection or from external sources when selected by invited artists and selectors.
‘Les Ouvrières’ (2016) by artist Paule Gilbert:
Over the fall of 2016, I pursued an artistic investigation including numerous interventions nourished by the attentive observation of a colony of Vespula wasps, commonly called paper-wasps, that lived along the Lachine Canal.
It led to an in situ installation entitled “Les Ouvrières (The Workers)”. The sound track was part of the installation alongside drawings of the wasps’ movements, handmade paper sculptures, a video and reference books.
The wasps’ sounds were captured at the entrance of the underground nest.
‘La Reine’ (2017) by artist Paule Gilbert:
At the end of the fall, the colony died, following its natural life cycle in a cold climate and I became interested in the queen, the only survivor who carries life for the next generation. “La Reine” was inspired by the hibernation cell of the paper-wasp queen.
“La Reine” was inspired by the hibernation cell of the paper-wasp queen. The paper cell was used as a performance device that was also shown as a gallery installation in 2017.
My research lead me to build an other cell by felting wool, a material better suited to my human condition.
